See the leg iron, called a "knee-stiffener," in the Civil War Gallery. It prevented the wearer from running away. Freed African Americans gave it to Michigan abolitionist Laura Haviland.

Program participants lie on floor pretending to be escapees hiding under water."Uncovering Clues to the Underground Railroad—Michigan and Beyond" was a Saturday morning program at the Michigan Historical Museum The first program in the "Storyliving" series was directed by Josh White Jr., musician and actor, courtesy of the Detroit Historical Museum. In this scene, escapees fool the dogs as they lie down and hide under water with reeds to help them breathe.
