Some Dates in Early Detroit Transportation History

1701 Cadillac and company arrive in 25 canoes to found settlement on the shore of the Detroit River.
1816 A road—part of today’s Woodward Ave.—is built to link Detroit and Pontiac.
1820s-30s Road building from Detroit to the interior of Michigan gets attention.
1825 The Erie Canal opens bringing settlers to Michigan.
1838 The Detroit and Pontiac RR starts operating a train between Detroit and Birmingham. Horses pull the train until a locomotive arrives in August 1839.
1847 A horse-drawn bus route runs along Detroit’s East Jefferson Avenue.
1848 The Plank Road Act allows plank toll roads to be built from Detroit to Pontiac, Saline, Erin, Howell and Grosse Pointe.
1863 The Detroit City Railway Company is established. It uses horse buses placed on rails.
1922  The Detroit Department of Street Railways begins operating all city street railways.
