My House!
Discover Your Family Collections
The Michigan Historical Museum
stores its collections of objects in a special storage space. Families,
too, often keep special mementos or family
heirlooms in storage areas like an attic.
First,
print the drawing of this home's attic. Discover your family collections
by answering the questions below. Then fill the attic by drawing
pictures of your answers in the attic's numbered spaces.
-
Many of the museum’s artifacts came from families. They had passed
the objects down from one generation to the next before they donated them
to the museum. Find an object in your family home that once belonged to
your grandparents or great-grandparents. Place it in storage by drawing it
in space #1.
-
Did a family member ever give you a special toy that once was theirs,
or do you have a favorite toy that you have saved over the years? To make
sure that you save it for your children someday, hide it away by drawing
it in space #2.
-
Sometimes families display objects that remind them of a special
occasion. Find a special object that is displayed in one of the rooms of
your house. Save it for future generations by drawing it in space #3.
-
Many people collect a lot of the same
things that they find interesting. They might have a collection of rocks or
coins or buttons, or collect cup
and saucer sets. If you (or
a member of your family) have a special collection, preserve it by drawing
its picture in space #4.
-
Many people collect souvenirs of their travels in Michigan and around
the world. Have you saved something from a trip or a vacation? Keep it as
a special memory by drawing it in space #5.
