The Collectors

Paperweights from the Susan Stebbins Stark Collection at the Michigan Historical MuseumCollecting—everybody does it! From pennies in a jar to the finest antiques, most people collect something. Individuals collect for the sake of learning, beauty, wealth and entertainment. What we collect is a reflection of who we are and how we view our world.

Tool Chest and Tools from the Alvin M. Bentley Collection at the Michigan Historical MuseumThe museum values collections for the history that they convey. It may use objects assembled as private collections to provide a history of decorative themes, to document technological change over time, or to present period furnishings that exemplify what life was like during a particular era.

Thanks for the Memories presents a sample of artifacts from the collections of four individual donors to the Michigan Historical Museum. Visit their collections —

China collecting is not a mere fancy—it is an education, and the resulting collection is a record of a people’s progress that appeals to us as no other line of collecting relics could.
