Lansing 1897, Michigan Historical Museum

A Stroll Downtown

Lansing boasted two downtowns in 1897: the original city center near the mills in north Lansing and one, close to the State Capitol, on Washington and Michigan Avenues. Ground-floor street fronts offered stoves, furniture, clothing and groceries to city dwellers and farm families. Upstairs, offices housed real estate and insurance agents, milliners and doctors.

Three out of Lansing’s five banks were in receivership—a reminder of the recent depression. However, economic recovery was evident in growing employment at city factories that meant more business for both downtowns.

Take a stroll downtown to window-shop at some of 1897 Lansing's fine stores and other establishments—
