E. Bement's Sons
Considered a fine stove that heated
evenly and conserved fuel, this Bement "Palace Oak" parlor stove also features
an unusual decoration. The copper figure represents Christopher Columbus planting the flag in
the New World. Bement may have exhibited its products at the Columbian Exposition in
Chicago in 1893.
In 1897, E. Bement & Sons reorganized as E. Bement's Sons and employed 396 men and
four women in a sprawling factory at Grand River and Ionia streets. Its average monthly
payroll of $14,300 was by far the city's largest. Bement's diverse product lineincluding
Palace stoves, Peerless plows, harrows, bobsleds and road scraperswas marketed
worldwide.
Three Bement brothers, Arthur, Willis and Clarence, shared oversight
of the company their father had founded. In addition, Arthur served as vice president of
the Lansing Improvement Company and Clarence represented the 4th ward on the board of
education. E. Bement's Sons went out of business in 1907. Most employees were able to find
work in the rapidly growing auto industry.
