The 1950s

Cars, Consumerism and the Cold War

Always buckle up!

With the Great Depression and World War II a recent memory, Michiganians moved into the 1950s as producers and consumers.

The Cold War may have been in the headlines, but Michigan automobile makers were putting chrome and tailfins on the streets. The 1957 Detroit Auto Show gallery features a red Corvette and a fabulously finned Plymouth Fury.

Consumer goods were on the shelves of the supermarkets and department stores. See pink appliances in "The Fifties at Home."

The beautiful Mackinac Bridge opened to traffic in November 1957. The Upper Peninsula gallery highlights the bridge, tourism and the U. P. State Fair.
