May 7, 1945: Less than a week after its leader Adolph Hitler commits suicide, Nazi Germany surrenders. Americans celebrate V-E (Victory in Europe) Day on May 8.

August 14, 1945: A short time after America drops atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrenders. Americans celebrate V-J (Victory over Japan) Day on August 15.

September 2, 1945: World War II ends.
