Winter Wonderland

For many Michigan visitors and residents,
winter is meant to be enjoyed as well as endured.

The Keweenaw snow gauge is reproduced in the Lakes and Land gallery. The winter scene features a flowing stream and a half-scale reproduction of Keweenaw County's famous snow pole marked with its 1978-79 record snowfall of 390.4 inches.

State ski resorts adopted the ski lift—first introduced in Michigan at Boyne Mountain's Hemlock Run in 1950—to attract skiers. The snow-making machine, pioneered at Boyne in 1953, extended Michigan's downhill ski season. Section of winter exhibit includes part of the flowing stream and a snowmobile.Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling also provided more winter fun.

In 1984, Michigan registered 270,000 snowmobiles, more than any other state. Michigan's winter festivals offer other wintertime favorites such as dogsled races, ice-sculpting contests and Tip-Up-Town, an ice-fishing festival in the city of Houghton Lake and on its lake.
