Playing for the Girls
Cheering for the Guys
The
1942 Garden High School girls' basketball team went undefeated in its
season. Four players on the "Garden Lassies" team in Michigan's
Upper Peninsula were related to one another. The photo includes, left to
right, front row, Coach Ray "Dude" Ranquette, Shirley Guertin,
Alva Boudreau and Jean Lester; back row, Ruth Tatrow, Joyce Lester,
Muriel Farley, Captain Lucy Adams and Ann Lester.
We played our hearts out even when we were sick with colds,
runny noses, etc. We played a hard game, but the most important lesson
we were taught was good sportsmanship from a no-nonsense coach. We played as a team; no one girl was the
star and no favoritism was shown from the coach. With only eight girls
we played to win!

Alva
and Mary Jean were also cheerleaders for the boys basketball team. A
Garden seamstress made their military-style cheerleading uniforms of
green corduroy and white satin. Mary Jean wears her uniform in the
photo.
