Growing Up in Michigan, 1880-1895, is based on the diaries and/or reminiscences of five children who grew up in Michigan during these years. They were chosen for their varied geographic locations; the variety of their cultural, social and economic heritage; and their accomplishments during their adult years.

The exhibit opened to the public on March 6, 1993, and is part of the Michigan Historical Museum's permanent galleries.

The works which form the basis of the exhibits and labels throughout the gallery include the following:

  • Brotherton, Delevan E. Diary (1881-1888) in the collections of the Delta County Historical Society, Escanaba, MI.

  • Corrothers, James. In Spite of the Handicap: An Autobiography. NY: George H. Doran Company, 1916.

  • Graham, Adeline Eliza. Diary (1880-1884) in the collections of the Berrien County Historical Association, Berrien Springs, MI.

  • Lutes, Della Thompson. The Country Kitchen. Boston, MA: Little, Brown, and Company, 1936.

  • Stevenson, Alice Laura. "Yesteryears: A History of the Archimedes Stevenson Family of Adrian" (1952?). Unpublished manuscript in the collections of the Lenawee Historical Society of Adrian, Adrian, MI. (Published as Adeline & Julia, Growing Up in Michigan and on the Kansas Frontier: Diaries from 19th Century America by Janet L Coryell and Robert C. Myers. East Lansing, MI. Michigan State University Press, 2000.)
