Long Distance Trade
Late Archaic people were great traders. They lived during the period from
about 3,000 to 1,000 B.C. When archaeologists study Late Archaic sites in
southern Michigan, they often find items that came from far away places. They
might find copper from the Upper Peninsula, or tools made from stone from
Ontario, Canada, or ocean shells from the Gulf of Mexico.
Stone,
shells and copper items (such as the knives in the photo) were probably traded from group to group over
long distances. These artifacts tell us that Late Archaic people in Michigan
had widespread trade connections.
