The Forest
Native American peoples found that Michigan was a good place to live. They
caught fish in the lakes and streams, and hunted deer in the forests. They
picked berries and harvested wild rice. In the spring, when the maple sap ran,
they made maple sugar. In some areas, they grew corn and other crops.
The People of the Three Firesthe Chippewa, Ottawa and Potawatomiand
other tribes made Michigan their home.
