Changes for Native Americans
Indian peoples in Michigan lost most of their land when they signed
treaties with the United States government. In some cases, they were forced to
move to other states. In other cases, they had to settle on small
parcels of landreservationsin Michigan.
With limited land, it was difficult to make a living by hunting, fishing,
and gardening. In spite of this, Indian cultures survived. Native Americans
held on to their traditions, their customs and their languages, They adjusted
to the changing times, found new ways to carry on their way of life and kept
their identity.
